Wow! It's 2019, and we're still here!
I like to say "the World ended on Winter Solstice December 21, 2012, and We are still Here!" Yes, Here on Earth. Our Mother Earth. Still revolving on its axis, still orbiting around the Sun. Officially living and breathing in the "Mayan End Times" - the times AFTER the Mayan Calendar "ended" - so to speak.

Time and Timelessness, Life and Death in 2016
It is New Year’s Eve morning and I’m sitting at our dining room table listening to the snow melt off our roof and fall like raindrops upon the rock and concrete patio outside our door, trying to come up with appropriate words for the last Alacazem column of 2015 - and as it turns out - the last weekly column of Alacazem ever. Ever? Forever? ***
A fire burns and flames dance behind the glass doors of our now one-year-old Jotul woodstove. The day is misty with low, vaporous clouds, white light sifts through the crystalline fog. Inside work works just fine for me today. I've been laying low, recovering from a not-too-friendly virus, reading the fascinating, lingually impressive Land of Oz novel Wicked by Gregory Macguire, practicing a new low-stress, no-stress approach to daily life.
Suddenly, I've decided what to write. I'm going to use the Alacazem astrology column I wrote last year at this time as a template, edit it appropriately for now and then publish it as it becomes what it will be. And happily, the subject matter of that column happened to be Time, an always timely topic, especially for this time of year.
So, here I am, here we are, moving through the second decade of the 21st Century, evolving as a species on an organically rich planet, revolving around the Sun - in a galaxy, in a cosmos - through the ethereal, eternal, inivisible, illusive mind-stuff we call time. And what is time?
If I had read the Special Collector’s Edition of Scientific American I bought myself for Christmas [in 2014] titled “A Matter of Time,” perhaps I might be able to answer the question. But, I have not. Instead I can only quote the cover: “It begins, it ends, it’s real, it’s an illusion. It’s the ultimate paradox.” And a forever and always mystery, just like life and death.
Today, I know the calendar clock has moved along and it is time to start a new year. I also know that a very good, old friend of mine has “clocked out” – her time here on the physical earth-plane ended just two days past. [The late, great Karen LaQuey died in late December 2014] The Angel of Death has taken her to another world, another realm. And once again, the Great Mystery prevails. The miracle of life begins our journey toward life’s end. It's all a matter of time. And then what? Does time then end?
Time and timelessness; one second, one moment, one hour, one day at a time. We live our lives. Perhaps the most important question is “How do we choose to live our lives, one day, one hour, one moment at a time?" Challenges and choices, changes and adjustments, actions and reactions. Karma and dharma, the world turns and time marches on. And today, I want to express my gratitude and the grace for the many publishers, editors and readers I have had the over the 27 years I have written Alacazem. From the 1988 version Alacazem: Astrology and Metaphysics in The Telluride Times with Scott Brown, Mike Ritchey and Roberto Cerveza [Bob Beer] to Mike Ritchey and partner Tom Slocum at the wonderful upstart paper Telluride Today as simply Alacazem, then on to The Telluride Times-Journal with the late John Davidson, Art Goodtimes, Tom Bonifietti, Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer and Karen Bellrose to the late Peter Spencer at The Norwood Post, [for whom I wrote the weekly Shooting Stars astrology column], to the Telluride Watch with Marta Tarbell and Seth Cagin, to The Telluride Daily Planet with Mike Ritchey [again], Bob Beer [again] and Tony Daranyi, to Rick Romancito at The Taos News and then, last but certainly not least, Susan and Clint Viebrock, who awarded Alacazem with a happy home online in their fabulously creative, cutting edge website newsfeed Telluride Inside...and Out.
My memory is a bit foggy when it comes to remembering all the talent, people and personalities I was so blessed to be involved with in the fastly vanishing species of the hard copy print newspaper world, and so it is here I will apologize in advance for any incorrect information or out of order, discombobulated mix and or mis-match of who and when and where, but I also just want to say THANK YOU many times over, for all you all have done to enlighten, encourage, support and inspire me as I have traveled the mentally, emotionally and creatively challenging, muse-fueled up and down road of life as a writer. The journey has been awesome.
And so in closing, I would like to end this memorandum with a profoundly timeless message written on a closet wall at Fort Collins High School by my 18-year-old niece, Lise, now an angelic presence in the mysterious, mystical realm of spirit: “Live each and every moment of your precious life.”
Wishing all people and life upon this magical planet Earth an embracing, awakening, uplifting, enlightening journey in 2016. May we live each and every moment of our precious lives. Blessings and peace.
Aries (Mar. 20-Apr. 19) A shift of ages and energy arrives with 2016. Ruler Mars entering secretive Scorpio forces issues of honesty, omission and denial. If you’ve been hiding things that should not be hidden, get it out! Mercury in Aquarius favors truth and candor. And with these two planets in square aspect, it’s coming out one way or another. Let others know how you feel and what you’re up to. Live the lessons you’ve learned.
Taurus (Apr. 19-May 20) Self-honesty is the best policy and year’s end reminds us that it’s time to take and make our annual personal inventory. And don’t be too hard on yourself; in fact focus on the opposite. You have come through adversity, challenge and change with flying colors, fought demons and won. Of course, that doesn’t mean you’re perfect. The greatest satisfaction and deepest grace comes from ongoing self-improvement.
Gemini (May 20-June 20) Ruler Mercury goes retrograde at 0° Aquarius on Jan. 5th and then quickly moves backward into Capricorn. This translates as a 3-week return to events and actions that took place in early 2015 and the consequential evolution that has followed. Time heals wounds and presents fresh perspectives. Utilize this time to assess and reassess, revisit and revise. Health is wealth, honor it above all else.
Cancer (June 20-July 22) Mental, medical, magical Mercury retrogrades back into Capricorn this week and reopens issues of relationship, pairing and sharing. Especially significant are important people and strong commitments, as well as established ways of thinking and behaving. Happily, Mars enters Scorpio and activates an openhearted approach to it all. Dig deep, discover the power of love and use it whenever and wherever you can.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 22) As one year gives way to another, planets shift and stars align in a dance of remembrance, revision and regeneration. Take it easy when and if you can, Mercury retrograde in your solar 6th house of health is a prescription of the most important order. Be critically analytical and brutally honest when it comes to physical and spiritual self-improvement. Determine what needs to be done and prepare to do it.
Virgo (Aug. 22-Sep. 22) A fresh new year delivers joyful news and happy thoughts to the Virgin. Good luck Jupiter has been good to you in 2015. You have expanded and improved your world, increased wealth and maintained health. Now it’s time to make sure you haven’t gone too far over the limit, lost sight of reality or are living beyond your means. Reel it all in and take a good personal inventory. Adjust accordingly and do the next right thing.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 22) The ongoing Pluto-Uranus square in Capricorn-Aries has finally reached critical mass and will now start slowing moving out of orb. But don’t be surprised if you’ve recently experienced some of its radical physical, spiritual or emotional upsets and awakenings. The good news is that whatever has suddenly emerged and disturbed your equilibrium is a harbinger of positive change. No joke, it's time to break the chains that bind!
Scorpio (Oct. 22-Nov. 21) Lusty, passionate Mars moves into Scorpio just two days into 2016 and awards you with two full months of heightened personal will and desire, increased motivation and a rather restless, excitable spirit. This is a classically energetic transit, a time to get a lot done, pursue goals and be productive in general. The potential negatives: impatience, anger and ego-inflated behaviors. Just stay awake and aware. Be cool.
Sagittarius (Nov. 21-Dec. 20) 2016 opens with a stationary retrograde Mercury in Aquarius that quickly moves back into Capricorn. This translates as a slow start to the New Year, a sort of reprieve and release from the customary pressure of resolutions and promises of self-betterment that are popular. In place of pressure, seek revitalization, restoration and redemption. It’s all about conscious choices. Make them.
Capricorn (Dec. 20-Jan. 19) Your Happy Birthday month rings in the New Year with a bit of pomp and pressure, slow-moving progress and quick response. You have no doubt signed up for more than your share of work and commitment, but after all, what’s new? Busy-bee Mercury goes retrograde on Jan. 5th and awards you with three golden weeks to finish up what you’ve started. Artistic inspiration motivates magnificent work. Create!
Aquarius (Jan. 19-Feb. 18) Messenger Mercury knocks on the electrically-charged Aquarius door and then quickly returns back into conventional Capricorn as the New Year begins. This translates as a time for more R&R, a slower pace and a deeper look at your physical, emotional and spiritual condition. How well are you taking care of your health? How to improve your daily routines? And diet? Too much sugar? Cut it out if you can. Yes!
Pisces (Feb. 18-Mar. 20) Mental Mercury moves retrograde into Capricorn just days following the advent of 2016 and remains there until late January. Welcome to several weeks that favor finishing rather than starting; revising, revisiting and rejuvenating anything and everything. Just think about all the words that begin with the prefix “re” and have fun trying them out. In other words, relax, recharge, regenerate, research, and remember…

Merry Chirstmas & Peace on Earth, Good Will to All
“Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight… I wish I may, I wish I might. Get the wish I wish tonight…"
“Peace on Earth”
Aries (Mar. 20-Apr. 19) The Christmas Full Moon in Cancer-Capricorn illuminates needs for home, family and nurturing with desires for autonomy, maturity and accomplishment. And with revolutionary Uranus resuming forward motion on the same day, you are ready to break free of any self-imposed or self-created prisons that have kept you from pursuing and maintaining a healthy balance of both. Embrace joy and choose love.
Taurus (Apr. 19-May 20) The world is promised an unconventional Christmas this year as wildcat Uranus squares the Cancer-Capricorn polarity of the yuletide Full Moon. And you may find yourself also in unfamiliar territory, feeling a bit out of synch and uncertain or uncomfortable with recent changes. But, ultimately, everything is exactly as it should be. Acceptance and compassion are allies now. Relax and enjoy the show.
Gemini (May 20-June 20) Upsets and unusual circumstances lead to awakening, breakthrough and enlightenment. When things are different than we are used to, we adjust according to our perceptions and needs. Whatever comes your way this Christmas week; embrace it with all your heart and soul. The Great Mystery is exactly that, a great mystery. New life and new challenges arrive each day. Breathe deep; embrace life.
Cancer (June 20-July 22) The Capricorn-Cancer Christmas Full Moon shines light into your heart and soul. Deep feelings and memories of Christmas past glimmer and glow as you walk through the uncharted territory of new and different worlds. Whether it’s foreign soil or good ol’ home ground, things have changed. Safety and security, home and family stand strong in a rapidly changing world. Stick to the rules and follow your heart.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 22) If you’re looking for a traditional Christmas this year, you might as well throw in the towel. The stars are aligned for unusual, unconventional and bizarre celebrations of love and light, peace and good will. Creative, electric displays and inventive presents are par for the course. Keep your eyes open and your heart willing as more than one old friend surprises you. Do what you can to stay jolly, share laughter and give love.
Virgo(Aug. 22-Sep. 22) A Christmas Full Moon guarantees illumination and light, especially if you live in the snow-covered mountains or plains. Seeing is believing, so keep your eyes open for jolly Santas and happy reindeer flying through the air with gifts and goodies. Who knows what is on the way? Best be prepared for the unique and unusual this year as one of the most unconventional yuletides in history graces the heavens. Have fun!
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 22) A Christmas Full Moon so close to winter solstice indicates an extra-potent, pivotal point in the holiday season and year. Be aware and awake as electric Uranus squares this lunation, adding plenty of snap, crackle, pop to the annual, conventional sparkle. Do your best to relax in the glittery glow, take time out when you need to and don’t allow others to pull you too tight or too thin. Keep it simple; give love and choose joy.
Scorpio (Oct. 22-Nov. 21) Scorpio loves and supports Capricorn just like Halloween gives way to Christmas. The holidays are born on all hallowed eve, at the end of harvest, and reach a pinnacle on New Year’s Day. That said, it’s time to feel the spirit and enjoy the joy. This year, however, be ready and willing for a change of venue or change of heart as planets align for something new and unusual. Just be sweet and embrace the beauty.
Sagittarius (Nov. 21-Dec. 20) With Master Teacher Saturn in early Sagittarius and Mars and Venus nearby, you may be feeling inspired, uplifted and motivated, protected and blessed, as well as ready to get down and serious about whatever has the most meaning and value for you now in your life. That’s a big apple, but one you finally seem to have an appetite for. First enjoy this rather unique and unusual holiday. Good tidings are in the wings.
Capricorn (Dec. 20-Jan. 19) Your Happy Birthday month comes this year with a Christmas Full Moon and a rockin’ rolling celebration of love and light. Prepare for the unusual, unique and bizarre rather than the conventional, traditional and time-honored. The world has changed and so have the holidays. Find what you can to hold on to and let go of the rest. Embrace the new and different. Find the creative spirit in your home and heart.
Aquarius (Jan. 19-Feb. 18) You may discover this Christmas to be just right for you this year as ruler Uranus puts an unconventional, electrically-charged sparkle on the holidays and makes it one of the least traditional celebrations of your life. Sound bizarre, or just right? Whatever the manifestation, don’t loose sight of the seaon’s inherent message and spirit. Give from the heart, be kind and compassionate, share love and choose joy.
Pisces (Feb. 18-Mar. 20) Peace on Earth is a traditional Christmas wish, but is it evermore just another naïve dream? Like Santa Claus? What to do? Share the spirit of peace whenever and wherever you can. Give it to those you know and those you don’t know. Gifts of compassion and loving-kindness awaken the heart and soothe the soul. Thoughts are real and energy is catchy. Full Moon light illuminates your path of grace. Follow the light and walk in beauty.

Winter Solstice and the Season of Light
The Season of Light takes place each year when the nights are longest and darkness reigns. It’s a time to acknowledge the retreat of the Sun and celebrate its return on winter solstice, the day our central star has reached its southernmost point on Earth’s visible horizon and appears to stop. On the day prior to solstice, the day of solstice and the day following solstice, the Sun appears to stand still. Thus the name solstice, which comes from the Latin words for "sun" [sol] and "stand still" [status, pp. of sistere] which translates as "come to a stop." On the fourth day, the Sun reverses direction and begins its long, six-month journey north to summer solstice. With this reversal, the length of daylight gradually increases and the hours of darkness starts to shorten.
The seasonal significance and cultural importance of winter solstice throughout history has varied from culture to culture and civilization to civilization. Rituals, gatherings, festivals, holidays and celebrations of rebirth and returning light – in honor of and homage to the Sun – were and continue to be universal. In America, Winter Solstice is overshadowed by Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, but everywhere we see holiday lights.
So, here we are, approaching Winter Solstice; hanging Christmas lights, lighting candles and minorahs - and whether we know it or not – honoring the return of the Sun. May your days be merry, your nights bright and your hearts filled with joy. Peace on Earth and Good Will to All…
Aries (Mar. 20-Apr. 19) Mental Mercury and suspicious Pluto square the Aries Moon and renegade Uranus conjoins it this weekend, putting flash and flair on whatever you do and say. Be aware that emotions are constantly changing, like the weather, observe and process feelings rather than indulge in them. Focus on the positive aspects of your life and others, it’s a time-honored recipe for a happy heart.
Taurus (Apr. 19-May 20) Commotion, chaos and trying to do it all have been playing ball with your psyche, pushing buttons and forcing solutions. Not exactly your cup of tea, but a required brew for getting the job done. Take a deep breath and exhale with relief as reprieve is on the way. The Sun’s entrance into Capricorn on winter solstice heralds a zodiac month of increasing goodness, gratitude and grace. Keep the faith and stay strong.
Gemini (May 20-June 20) Ho ho ho! With both Santa and winter on the way and holiday hustle-bustle in full-force glory, count your blessings and focus on goodness. Messenger Mercury conjoins persuasive Pluto in crafty Capricorn and then squares revolutionary Uranus prior to winter solstice, making this a very volatile and possibly wicked week. The best way to avoid harm is to be strong, kind and compassionate. Do your best.
Cancer (June 20-July 22) Winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year. It also marks the halfway point through your solar year, a debut of sorts, a time when you begin to feel the pull of the world outside your door. Go ahead and follow your instincts and intuition, a happy heart will not lead you astray. As days lengthen with sunlight, so also does your spirit ascend. Enjoy the final weeks of the holiday season. Get out and about.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 22) Fire and earth elements dance an eternal dance of light and dark, war and peace. Partners change and times evolve, but we are here on Earth to do our best. And of course, Lions are the kings and queens, regal beasts of courage and heart. Embrace destiny and follow the golden road of spirit, shine your light upon the world. Global challenges compel miraculous efforts, and you are one. Be essentially your best.
Virgo (Aug. 22-Sep. 22) Energy builds as Christmas approaches and holiday spirits abound. Tap into the goodness and grace of giving from the heart, thinking good thoughts and doing good works. It may sound corny, but this is truly a time to rise to the occasion and share peace, love and joy with the world. Thoughts are real and energy is catchy. Live in the light and shine like the stars.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 22) Pluto, Mercury and Uranus join force with the Moon and square dance with the Sun this week, sparking fires and then putting them out. Stay neutral in face of conflict and conflagration, focus on solutions and cultivate inner peace wherever you go. Heavenly spirits sing joy to the world as winter solstice marks the season of increasing light. Do your best to be as good and graceful as you are.
Scorpio (Oct. 22-Nov. 21) Slight adjustments in perspective and attitude are necessary this week as planets jostle and jive their way to awakening and new information. Revolutionary acts and seething suspicions float on the airwaves and resonate through the ethers. But love and grace are there as well. Recognition is the most powerful force in consciousness and recognizing the goodness in yourself and others is the most gracious thing you can do.
Sagittarius (Nov. 21-Dec. 20) As your birthday month draws to a close and the Sun’s entrance into Capricorn marks the first day of winter, count your blessings and feel the grace. Thinking is the first step to doing and manifestation comes via action. Knowing what you want is essential to getting what you want. Now it’s time to recognize the awesome power of choice and the fate of making decisions. Do your best and the universe will do the rest.
Capricorn (Dec. 20-Jan. 19) Winter solstice takes place this year on December 21st at 9:49 pm MST, when the Sun enters Capricorn. Herald another birthday year and month. And this week promises plenty of action and excitement. With both mental messenger Mercury and persuasive powerhouse Pluto in your sign, the world rocks. A square to Uranus in fiery Aries challenges awakening and change. Keep your eyes and heart open.
Aquarius (Jan. 19-Feb. 18) Moving and grooving as you count your money and your blessings opens the door to the sweet camaraderie that fuels your engine and keeps you running. Friends are precious and a source of inspiration and encouragement. Get out and see them, make the effort. Equations run the world and everything we put out comes back to us, good, bad, ugly or sublime. Share your visions and hopes with the world.
Pisces (Feb. 18-Mar. 20) As the season of darkness wanes and winter solstice approaches, you may feel the wheel of life slowly shift toward more hope and optimism. The Capricorn zodiac month brings us both Christmas and New Years, celebrations of light and new beginnings. Take some time this week to feel and remember cherished hopes, dreams and aspirations. Love, peace and joy are there. Feel the love, follow the joy.

VIVA Guadalupe!
“Our Lady of Guadalupe, O mystical rose. Help all those who invoke thee…”
Years ago, I was called upon by this angelic lady to be a messenger of her peace, love and protection. Traveling down the Baja Peninsula on our honeymoon in 1980, I saw her image and effigy everywhere. From the Mexico border-crossing in Nogales to Land’s End in Cabo San Lucas, she showed up in out-of-the-way cantinas, fuel stations, roadside shrines, taco stands, grocery stores, parks and playgrounds. You name it, she was there.
I was of course captivated by her beautiful image and audacious ability to go where others dare not tread.
Her serene face and hands posed in prayer, star-studded turquoise cape and magnificent, full-body golden halo pulled me to her, intrigued and attracted me like a shiny fishing lure dancing across the Sea of Cortez. I was hooked.
Many years later, I found myself working on a documentary film about La Virgen de Guadalupe, a.k.a the Mother of the Americas, Tonantzin, the Queen of Mexico and many other appellations. The Guadalupe road took me from the San Geronimo Church at the Taos Pueblo to the 14th Century Monasterio de Santa Maria de Guadalupe in Caceres, Spain, then back to the mission churches of New Mexico and eventually to Tepeyac, outside of Mexico City, to La Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, the site of her apparition in 1531 to an indigenous native Nahuatl man as he walked to mass at dawn.
Enchanted, charmed and mesmerized by her beauty, strength and grace, I discovered a protectress and guardian santa, a sister, Mother and friend through thick and thin. This week is la semana de Guadalupe, a week of pilgrimage, homage and veneration for the little Virgin, la Virgencita, all over Mexico and in much of Latin America – including the United States. Guadalupe’s feast day is December 12th each year and the twenty-four hours preceding it are filled with dancing, offerings, celebrations and vesperas.
This year I will be attending the fiesta in and outside of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in North Denver, where I have gone for the last several. Predominantly Hispanic, people of all ages sing and pray in devotion to and gratitude for Guadalupita. I love going and thanking this little madrecita, angelita, hermanita, amigita for coming into my life.
May we find the strength of heart, spirit and courage to live in peace, act with love and chose joy. Viva Guadalupe!
Aries (Mar. 20-Apr. 19) A New Moon in fiery Sagittarius opens your heart to spirit in all its beauty and infinite possibility. You are surrounded by love and light, it’s everywhere and in everyone you meet, all you have to do is see it. The old adage “seek and you shall find” applies to your life now. What are you seeking? How about your spiritual condition? How might you bolster and improve it? Keep your heart open.
Taurus (Apr. 19-May 20) Value systems are foundational building blocks of life, and values are learned, experienced, spiritually fueled beliefs. Now you may find your values and beliefs questioned or challenged by external circumstances and conditions. The world rocks with cries of war and killing as songs of peace seem lost in fear, suspicion and terror. Assist others with grass roots stability and live an example of peace.
Gemini (May 20-June 20) The Sagittarius New Moon begins a powerful annual lunar-solar cycle of relationship attention and involvement; it’s the time for pairing and sharing. Of course, Sagittarius lunations always take place during the season of love and light. True to heart is a good motto now, one that will guide and direct your happy holiday course. Practice kindness, forgive yourself and others and do the next right thing.
Cancer (June 20-July 22) A somewhat intriguing week falls as snowflakes glisten and sleigh bells ring. Christmas lights and chilly nights kindle flames of romance as you feel the desire to share the holiday spirit with friends and loved ones. Relax and let it flow. Others find you beautiful, fun, full of grace and goodness. Lighten your load with laughter, enjoy the festivities and spend time with family and friends at home or out and about.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 22) Happy hearts make for a happy world and giving love is the best way to get it. Gifts of joy are found very close to home this year; you need not go far to find exactly what you need and want. And because you are willing to share your magnanimous thoughts, feelings and spirit with others, you may find just how jolly the world can be. Keep your head up and your heart full of goodness.
Virgo (Aug. 22-Sep. 22) Jolly Jupiter in Virgo may have you playing Santa in more ways than one. Good luck with that! Other people see you as a generous giver, competent player and excellent helper, and you are. As always, just make certain you are not over-giving, over-doing and over-helping. Otherwise, you may get lost in the process and end up with a pile of bills and potential resentments. Embrace joy and maintain healthy boundaries.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 22) Passionate Mars transiting peace-loving Libra sextiles the happy-go-lucky Sagittarius New Moon this week, igniting spirit and infusing hearts with spirit. You may experience the amazing grace of your blessings, the miracle of life and the astounding luck of being on planet Earth. Maintain an open heart and live the way you want the world to be. Let peace, love and joy guide and sustain your path.
Scorpio (Oct. 22-Nov. 21) With love planet Venus and asteroid Juno in Scorpio, commitment and marriage may emerge as recurring holiday themes. Others find you especially attractive now so don’t be surprised if you receive more offers, gifts and attention than usual. A fresh lunar cycle in Sagittarius puts you in the driver’s seat, so be ready to chart the course. Friends are willing travelers and good companions. Be good to them all.
Sagittarius (Nov. 21-Dec. 20) Planetary squares from Jupiter in Virgo and Chiron in Pisces to the Sagittarius New Moon set the stage for a lunar month of analysis regarding professional direction and domestic environment. Are you happy with your home and family life or ready to make a change? Career opportunities continue to influence your direction, which is good for now. Follow your heart and travel the high road of spirit as much as possible.
Capricorn (Dec. 20-Jan. 19) This week’s Sagittarius New Moon and lunar cycle opens the door on a month of increasing spiritual awareness. You may find yourself no longer satisfied with superficial relationships and endeavors, seeking more meaning and less fluff than in the past. Time alone pays off now as a way to relax, regenerate and recharge. Balance peace, quiet and solitude with happy social get-togethers and meaningful holiday events.
Aquarius (Jan. 19-Feb. 18) As the holidays progress and festivities abound, you may find yourself romancing the past and wanting to connect with friends and people with whom you’ve been close. Make calls, contact old buddies and get out to share the peace, love and joy of spirit. Camaraderie is a beacon of light and inspiration now, something good. Honor family traditions but be sure to try out something new for fun, fiesta and spice.
Pisces (Feb. 18-Mar. 20) Healer Chiron in Pisces and giant Jupiter in Virgo square the Sagittarius New Moon this week, opening the door on a lunar month of challenge and possible change regarding personal, social and professional relationships and commitments. You may feel conflict between your own personal goals and desires and those of others. Individual freedom is a theme. Cultivate spiritual practice and take it one day at a time.

Sagittarius, Santa Claus, the Archer and ISIS
This week I wanted to write about the history of Santa Claus, from his Mediterranean origins as Saint Nicholas in the 3rd century A.D. to our 21st century now, but I find myself impelled to write about something else: the positive/negative, good/evil, dark/light polarity of the Sagittarius archetype, a.k.a. the Archer. And dare I say it? A.k.a the shooter.
Ironically, the Archer and Santa have a lot in common. Coincidence or synchronicity, fate or destiny, holidays and events taking place during any particular zodiac month and sign, as well as the icons that represent them, synchronistically support, resonate and emanate the archetypal energies of the zodiac sign in orb at any particular point in time. In the quest to understand the cosmic science of astrology, we first learn the twelve signs of the zodiac. Then we observe and correlate celestial phenomena and earthly events as they evolve against the backdrop of that zodiac in the constellations of the ever-revolving, starry night sky.
Seasonal energies express themselves via changing weather patterns, changing light and, as funny as it seems, seasonal holidays and events. As creatures of habit and beings of light, we experience and intuit those seasonal cycles and energies, establish habitual feelings and behaviors, traditions and celebrations born of starlight, the starlight of the seasonal stars above us. Celestial, heavenly starlight.
Fast forward to the holidays. The season of largesse and grandeur, giving and receiving (spend, travel, indulge, party) - we are encouraged to open our hearts and share the holiday spirit with people we love and know, people we don’t know and even people we may not particularly like…the messages of peace on Earth, good will to all emanate throughout the ethers.
Sagittarius is all about doing things in a big way. Just like Santa. Wild sleigh rides, reindeer and a big bag of toys, flying around the globe, delivering presents to every good boy and girl on the planet. Santa Claus exhibits a variety of Sag qualities: large and robust, a true sense of abandon, willing to risk it all for a worthy cause; positive, enthusiastic, no fear and plenty of faith…spreading joy and generosity all over the world, making children happy. A true philanthropist. Santa Claus is a popular icon of the jolly-good side of Sagittarius.
But Sagittarius is also where we find and establish belief systems and our understanding of the cosmos, our creation stories, philosophies, politics and religion. It represents the natural, cosmic world in total, the ever-expanding Universe, the numinous and divine; supernatural beings, angels, devils, demons, gods and goddesses. Sagittarius is spirit and the spiritual realm, the higher self, higher knowledge, world travel and foreign culture; it is characterized by the adventurer, explorer, and the one who discovers. Sagittarius is the seeker and the quest, the ever-glimmering horizon and the yearning to know what lies beyond.
And Sagittarius is symbolized by The Archer, the bowman or woman, the iconic spiritual warrior; the bodhisattva, the crusader, the one willing to fight and die for right. Willing to die for what he believes is right. And this is where Sagittarius gets in trouble, loses balance and goes to extremes - fighting, dying and killing for one’s beliefs. The art of war fueled by the passionate fire of the righteous. It is here we see the dark side of the Sagittarius Sun.
Santa is the jolly side of Sagittarius. And dare I say it? The radical Islamic terrorist group ISIS is a current, disturbing example of the very, very un-jolly side, the darkest side, the extremely evil side of Sagittarius.

The synchronicity of astrological and seasonal archetypes, as well as their symbols and icons, continues to intrigue and amaze me. When I was looking for images online to use in my column prior to writing this intro, I googled “the Archer” and was astounded by what popped up. Apparently there is an animated TV series with a protagonist by the name of Sterling Archer that revolves around an international spy agency called ISIS, the International Secret Intelligence Service, and the lives of its employees. I’m posting a few of the icons. The irony is obvious. According to the website, the ISIS logo and acronym for their pop series organization has been disbanded, due to obvious reasons. (The “Archer” series was created and aired in 2009, before the current Islamic ISIS organization emerged in the Western world.)
I am deeply disturbed, stunned and saddened by the recent mass shooting in San Bernardino by two – dare I say it – radical Islamic terrorists. Religious zealots, extremists, killing innocent people. For what? I don’t know what more to say…
Aries (Mar. 20-Apr. 19) The waning Moon is a perfect time to prepare for the hustle-bustle, New Moon energy of the holidays. Whatever you do and wherever go, do not rush. Impatient Mars in normally serene Libra squares Pluto and opposes Uranus this week, challenging tempers and tempting fate. Be extra calm and careful, take your time even when you think you don’t have enough of it.
Taurus (Apr. 19-May 20) Hustle-bustle Mars in relationship oriented Libra squares Pluto and opposes fast-acting Uranus in impatient Aries this week, so be forewarned. You or others may be tempted to force issues or bring up long-buried memories of misdeeds and wrongdoing, causing upset and potential harm. Better to focus on the present and use your energy to get things done. No question, there is plenty to do. Move and groove.
Gemini (May 20-June 20) With the Sun strongly committed to the uplifting, philanthropic ethos of Sagittarius, you are no doubt dealing with partners, people and issues of all sizes and stripes in the world outside your door. Others look to you for assistance and guidance, support and understanding. Focus on positive solutions and the liberation of honesty, creative change and new life behaviors.
Cancer (June 20-July 22) You may get caught up in the turbulence of other people’s problems or family of origin issues as hot-flash Mars, suspicious Pluto and fast-acting Uranus dance in a triangle of you, me and them. The function here is positive, habit-breaking change and new life. Addiction, jealousy or emotional wounding may be powerful themes in the week. Focus on healthy boundaries, cultivate patience and trust the Universe.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 22) The holiday season and Sagittarius zodiac month are traditionally a time of uplifting spirit and happy-feeling vibrations for the Lion. This year, however, you may feel less enthusiastic and more realistic than in the past. Happily immune and impervious to the hype and promotion of Christmas spending, you can now utilize self-referral and follow your heart. Authentic giving feels just right.
Virgo (Aug. 22-Sep. 22) With Jupiter happy in virtuous Virgo, you may feel encouraged to see more, do more and even spend more than usual this holiday season. And that’s all fine and dandy, as long as you don’t forget to balance your checkbook and stay in the happy zone when it comes to giving. Keep track of what you spend and maintain healthy emotional, physical and financial boundaries. That said, it’s all-good!
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 22) You may feel a bit rundown and ramshackled this week, wanting to rest and relax but unable to do so. Partners, mates and people in general want your time and attention, the holidays beckon and there is much to do! Take a deep breath each morning and find the quiet, calm space you need to recharge and regenerate sometime during the day or night. Otherwise you will certainly explode. Good luck!
Scorpio (Oct. 22-Nov. 21) As the Moon wanes toward its Dec. 11th New Moon lunation, the night sky sparkles with starlight. And there is no better tonic for stress and worry than the vast canopy of deep space. Indulge yourself in a little cosmic medicine and check out the glitter and glow. Meanwhile, trust your angels to guide you through the twists and turns of 21st century life on Earth. Refrain from toxic words and poison potions. Breathe deep.
Sagittarius (Nov. 21-Dec. 20) A waning Saturn [in Sag] square to Neptune [in Pisces] favors more diligence in discerning fact from both fallacy and fantasy. You may find the world highly toxic and unbelievably apocalyptic. It can certainly feel like Armageddon or the End Times, but truth is, it’s actually just another day in the Milky Way. Find the higher perspective and remember you don’t have to [can’t] go to Mars to get it. Be here now.
Capricorn (Dec. 20-Jan. 19) The ongoing, long-term transit of Pluto in Capricorn comes into focus this week as a square from hot-button Mars opens the door to what lies hidden beneath layers of conditioning, programming and experience. This translates as a potentially life-changing week for you, a checkpoint of status and progress regarding your personal spiritual condition, most important relationships, career and family life. Be cool.
Aquarius (Jan. 19-Feb. 18) A red-hot Mars square in peace-loving Libra to seething Pluto in controlling Capricorn and later week opposition to freedom-loving Uranus in courageous Aries puts you in the position of peace-maker and task-master. You see the beauty and ultimate strength of goodness in the face of evil, but also understand the seductive power of fear, suspicion and hate. Galvanize courage, think different and explore new directions.
Pisces (Feb. 18-Mar. 20) The waning square of Saturn in Sag to Neptune in Pisces, combined with a later week Chiron lunar square translates as a dynamic challenge to re-evaluate your most fundamental beliefs. Predominant Judeo-Christian ethics condition us to accept victim-savior archetypes and preach redemption via man-made religion. The Aquarian Age opens individual hearts to the Divine Heart. One love, one heart.
