Words or No Words, Seasons Change & Spring is Spring

I've been writing the Alacazem astrology column now for 24 years. Sometimes it's hard to believe that I've come up with Sun-sign forecasts and intros for that long - week after week, year after year. Sometimes it flows, and sometimes it doesn't.

From its first publication in the 1988 Telluride Times weekly newspaper, with Scott Brown and Bob Beer, to Mike Ritchey's Telluride Today, to Tom Bonifietti and Rosemerry Wahtola [Trommer], Karen Metzer [Bellrose] and eventually Marta Tarbell at the Telluride Times Journal, back to Mike Ritchey and Tony Daranyi - who had by then purchased the Telluride Daily Planet - to Clint and Susan Viebrock's 'zazzy' Internet 24/7 state-of-the-art Telluride Inside & Out - where it's currently published - Alacazem has traveled from local paper to local paper, Telluride to Taos and back, up and down, all around. I established the Alacazem.com website in 2008, when I was notified by sweet editor Matt Beaudin at the Telluride Daily Planet that the new owner was no longer interested in carrying Alacazem. At the time, I had an email list comprised of people who had read the column in Telluride and moved away; clients, friends, family and others who lived elsewhere and had somehow run across it, tracked me down and requested to be included on the list. The Taos News was publishing Alacazem in their Tempo magazine each week, so I was still writing it. I took a look at my transits and then called Dana Gerhardt - one of my favorite astrologers - and decided to leap into cyberspace. So - voila! - my own website. Self-fueled security! I felt a responsibility to my readers.

Relationships, careers, columns, houses, towns, astrological charts; everything has a life of its own, a vibration, a karma, an energy, a destiny. There is plenty on this Earth and in this Galaxy upon which we have no control - and let's face it - it's almost everything and everywhere. However, we do have some control over ourselves - theoretically - in what we say, what we do, how we react. I have to find the time to write the words to manifest this column, to look at the stars and planets, to feel the vibes, to ask the cosmos for the permission to co-create. I have control of that. But, what happens when I sit down to write and nothing comes? What's up with that?Today I'm happy and healthy, blessed and grateful to be where I am - words or no words. I know the snow is melting and that the season of spring arrives on March 19^th at 11:15 p.m. MDT, when the Sun enters the cardinal fire sign of Aries and the natural zodiac year begins. I accept the fact that some days the words and vibrations come, and some days they don't. I can always tap into my heart and write from the soul. Things constantly change, like the weather, like the seasons. What is fantasy and hyperbole one day can be realistic and common the next. I also know that what one does feeds what one is, and I've heard it said that character is destiny. Here's to goodness and grace; good character and graceful destiny. Happy Spring Equinox! Venus & Jupiter: Love & Peace, Good Luck and Fortune

Venus, Jupiter and the Moon have been stellar performers in a dazzling display of celestial light over the last few weeks. The Feb. 21^st Pisces lunar cycle opened the show with several evenings of magical twilight as the waxing crescent Moon danced amongst these two brilliant planets in the western sky following sunset. Each night, the Moon grew larger, rose later and moved progressively eastward, leaving our solar system's two brightest points of light alone together, dancing with the stars.

On March 8^th @ 12:39 am MST the full Moon came to fruition @ 1813' Virgo/Pisces. We are exactly halfway through the Pisces lunar cycle and on the downhill slide toward the March 19^th spring equinox and the March 22^nd Aries New Moon. Meanwhile, Venus and Jupiter grow ever closer in the west at dusk and into darkness, presenting us with a fabulous opportunity to observe planetary movements and conjunctions. On March 10^th Venus will be below and slightly to the right of Jupiter. On March 11^th and 12^th the two planets will be side by side, with Venus on the right. On March 13^th Venus will have moved up and above Jupiter, still on the right. (Venus is significantly brighter than Jupiter, so its easy to distinguish between the two).

What a magnificent time to be here on Earth, gazing at the heavens, watching the ancient goddess of beauty and love - Venus - join force with the mythological king of the heavens - Jupiter. These are the zodiac's planetary benefics and their celestial union gives birth to a pink and turquoise cosmic bubble where spiritual generosity, hope, truth, good luck, good fortune and magnanimity (Jupiter) is laced with daunting beauty, sweet love, devotion, affection, enduring peace and perfect harmony (Venus). It is here we see the cosmic concubine of sensual pleasure and artistic creativity - Venus - embrace, merge and become one with the laughing, light-hearted heavenly host of our ever-expanding universe, the purveyor of all power and potential, the cosmic king of kings - Jupiter. The possibilities are limitless, and hopefully, eternally sweet.

Telluride is all a-buzz this week with the 19^th Annual Telluride Aids Benefit and all its related events; fashion and art shows, auctions, trunk sales, ski races and all over town - parties. Gorgeous models and cutting edge couture, magical sets, rousing runways and up-beat music; all pieces of the juicy pie that we know today as TAB.

For almost 10 years now, I've watched my beautiful niece, Allie Belle, give her time and talents as a model and ardent supporter of this stellar philanthropic event. And I admire and appreciate her efforts, as I admire and appreciate everyone who contributes - in whatever way they choose - to the fundraising and implementation of the education, prevention and awareness in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Many of us have been touched by the sweeping arm of this worldwide pandemic. In the autumn of 1998, my younger brother, James Nicholas, died due to HIV-related causes. He was 43 years old.

This year my sister Pam - Allie's mother - has designed and fabricated several stunning vintage-styled kitchen aprons to be auctioned off over the weekend. She's an excellent seamstress with an artistic spirit and a meticulous eye. Needless to say, her products are far and away above and beyond anything on the market today. She brought them down and showed them to me with her characteristic humility. "Maybe no one will buy them, who knows?" she said. Ha! "Are you kidding?" I asked. "They'll be bought up like hotcakes." If you happen to be lucky enough to be in the place and space when and where these hot items hit the auction block, you'll understand exactly what I mean. Look for the label Pamela Ann...these are prototypes in a new fashion line, debuting @ TAB...

The New Moon of February 21^st took place just days after the Sun moved into Pisces, and gently gave birth to one of the most fertile and poignant lunar cycles of the tropical year. Packed with the subtle but awesome power of surrender, the magic of paradox and the strength of humility, the mystical, amniotic waters of the twelfth sign prepare us for the radical birth of Aries and the primal thrust of spring, when new life struggles for survival. The sense of belonging, the feeling of comfort, the familiar kitchen sink and rose-colored antique stove. My bunkhouse sanctuary, the Guadalupes, Lise's memorial wreath. My own bed, the crackling fire, the melting snow; even the mud feels sweet. How silly we are, us humans. Our emotions and feelings, our perceptions and thoughts. The mind, the body, the heart. The soul and spirit.

Here we are on planet Earth, walking and talking, living and breathing. I can travel the world and see the magic of it all; the Great Mother lives not only in the sparkling seas and crashing waves of Mexico, but also in the mighty mountains and glimmering snows of Colorado. I feel her embrace wherever I go; the breeze is her breath; the sounds of nature, her voice.

I express my gratitude often because I feel it. I know I am blessed to be alive here in this world of wealth and abundance, in an expanding Universe of unlimited potential and possibility. Stars beckon and moonbeams enchant, sunlight illuminates and rainbows shimmer.

Embrace the Moment, Seize the Day...

By the time you read these words, I'll be on the road, heading back home to Colorado.

I'm writing this column two weeks in advance so I can email it long before it's due. We are preparing to leave our little Mexican hideout here on the East Cape and head north, toward los Estados Unidos - the United States - in less than a week. It will take another week to drive the 1,000 mile peninsula, cross the border and then diagonal northeast across the last 700 miles through California, Arizona, Utah and southwest Colorado to home.

I am counting the days to blast-off. I always do because it's always hard to believe that we'll actually be gone; gone from the shining Sea of Cortez, the soft, sandy beaches and the gently breaking waves. The magical sunsets and brilliant colors of morning dawn, the pelicans skimming the translucent aqua surf, moonlight glimmering on gracefully swaying palms, the stellar shimmering shape of the Scorpion rising straight up in the blue-black darkness before daylight. I learned long ago to live in the ever-present now; embrace the moment - carpe diem - seize the day. I know today that speculating about the future, living in the "what ifs" and the projections of "what might be" is as useless as living in the past and dwelling on what might have been.

I love my life; I am grateful and blessed. I can feel the power of the Mother Earth wherever I go, whatever I do. Adios to the sun-baked colors of Mexico, the 80 degree temperatures and the language of Spanglish. Here we go - aqui nos vamos - into the beautiful north. Hasta luego!

The Leo Aquarius Full Moon: Rev-limiters and Check Valves

This week's February 7th full Moon takes place at 2:54 p.m. MST @ 18 32' Leo/Aquarius, and brings to fruition the January 23^rd Aquarius new Moon that gave birth to the Chinese New Year of the Dragon 4710. Full of life and spirit, Leo/Aquarius full Moons - one in summer and one in winter - are the year's two most flamboyant lunations. This is when the romantic, courageous heart of the Lion pairs up with the wild and crazy, inventive soul of the revolutionary rebel, Aquarius, and traditionally - all *&%# breaks loose.

This year, however, we are under the influence of a retroactive, retrograde Mars in Virgo, a Saturn station in Libra, and an ongoing battle between radical Uranus in independent Aries and obsessive Pluto in controlling Capricorn. Translation: motivations and desires to get out there or throw caution to the wind when it comes to affairs of the heart or wild, crazy games of chance are being throttled down by some mysterious cosmic rev-limiter that kicks in when we get going too fast or far. The Aquarius Lunar Month and Lunar Year 4710 of the Dragon

The first week of the Aquarius zodiac month reminds me that days are getting longer. It won't be long before we see the morphing of the seasons; mountain bluebirds show up in the West End shortly after Valentines Day and by then, spring equinox is little more than a month away.

Down here on the Tropic of Cancer, the slender slip of a waning crescent Moon rises in darkness above the salty Sea of Cortez like a lone happy-face smile or exquisitely shaped bowl of glowing amber light. The 23 latitude puts the Earth-to-Moon perspective in perfect balance - there is no visible tilt or slant - it's a luminous cup waiting to be filled with dreamer's dreams, lover's hopes and children's wishes. In the first hour of January 23^rd the Sun and Moon came together at 02 42' Aquarius to form the exact conjunction aspect of an Aquarius New Moon. That same day at sunset, the world marked the advent of Chinese New Year 4710, lunar year of the Dragon. Wow! It's another chance for yearly resolutions and fresh starts. Contrast and Paradox: Happy Chinese New Year of the Dragon!

Obviously, the best team was the Patriots...

Hey, now! Here we are. The Denver Broncos are done for the season; I'm happy its over. Last weeks loss made the previous weeks victory even sweeter. Lately, I've been thinking a lot about contrast; contrast of color, contrast of experience obviously, the contrast between winning and losing. How can we know pleasure without pain? Isn't freedom more precious after imprisonment than before it? How can we appreciate liberty if we've always had it? And how about love?

Buddhist and other spiritual teachings encourage us to recognize the similarities in polarities - the common denominator of polar opposites - and learn to look at them as complementary rather than antithetical. Irony and paradox make great literature and are a vital both luscious and lugubrious - part of life here on Earth.

I'm feeling rather philosophical today. The wind is steady but it's warm - low 80s and sunny. We're staying in a remote section of the East Cape of the southern Baja Peninsula and I find myself missing home and family, my friends, my meetings and my readings. Can I actually be missing work? I tend to stay busy here in spite of spending as much time as possible in the hammock, reading or just hanging out with chores and cooking, the occasional trip to San Jose del Cabo or La Ribera for groceries and supplies, long morning walks on the beach with the dogs, motorcycle rides to the Crossroads Country Club for entertainment and the Internet, writing astrology columns and working on my novel. I notice that I like to feel productive and if I don't, I get restless, irritable and discontent. How can that be possible, when I'm the luckiest girl in the world?

Just kidding. Everything is relative and in contrast - to whatever. I'm grateful and blessed, living life one day at a time, thankful to be here; thankful to witness the magnificent Sun rise over the silver Sea of Cortez, the full yellow Moon, glowing like a jack-o-lantern on a canvas of muted pinks, cerulean and lilac blues. Whales spout and splash as pelicans skim the turquoise shore break, looking for breakfast. Ospreys cry and frigate birds fly, owls hoot, ravens caw, hummingbirds flit, buzzards soar and an elusive cougar watches me calmly, then quickly disappears into the desert.

This morning a red-tail hawk showed up, calling me to attention. He appeared right in front of me as I sat drinking coffee; floating a thermal on the little hill above the arroyo, close up and personal, eye-to-eye. He reminded me to be aware, to be observant, to observe the obvious in everything I do, that life is sending me signals. Look for the omens, follow the signs. See the magic, heal the wounds. And come home when youre ready.

The middle of January delivers a waning Moon, waxing daylight and a winning Bronco team at least this week! Ha!

I cant resist the temptation to weigh in on the Tebow Train and all the well-deserved hysteria-euphoria of last Sundays fantastically riveting game in Denver against the Pittsburgh Steelers; the focus, ambition and success of the Bronco offense and defense early on, leading Pittsburgh 20 to 6 at halftime and then hanging tough as Big Ben limped his way to a fourth quarter end tie score of 23 to 23 - which resulted in an overtime period - was impressive, to say the least. Then! The first time ever test of the new NFL overtime playoff rules; Broncos win the toss, receive the kick and on the very first down of overtime, the brilliant play call by the Denver offense for a Tebow pass to Demaryius Thomas who had been beating his defender, Ike Taylor, all day long - and an unbelievable!!! on-the-button completion, fabulous reception and fantastic run by Thomas for an 80-yard - yes!!! - TOUCHDOWN!!! BRONCOS WIN!!!

Lots of exclamation marks I know, but for me a native Denverite and little girl Bronco fan it was a moment of grace, suspended in time, a pinnacle in the agony and ecstasy of fandom - it just doesnt get any better than this. Listening to our Sirius-XM radio, on the edge of my hammock, I felt transported; light, seconds of pure emotional bliss, reduced to nothing and at once, one with thousands, possibly millions. I could feel all the fans, the pundits, the sportscasters, the coaches and players. I was thinking of all my family and friends, tuned in and watching the game on their big high-definition flat-screen TVs back up in Colorado; laughing, screaming, jumping up and down; feeling the same wonder and awe, the joy and jubilation of an out-of-this-world, phenomenal, extraordinary, marvelous, remarkable, unexpected AFC playoff WIN!

Timothy Richard Tebow - a controversial and polarizing young Heisman trophy-winning quarterback - devout Christian and disciplined athlete a true believer coming off three consecutive losses and the worst quarter of his entire football career - pulled the trigger and won the game, gifting the world with a touch and taste of the miraculous; the against-all-odds triumph and victory that transports us from the mundane to the ethereal; the floating-flying place, above reality, where we can forget fleetingly the trials and tribulations of lifes struggles and challenges, the place of legendary mirth and joy; mythic, epic the supernatural heaven-earth place the divine moment; a true spiritual experience.

Im down here in Mexico on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, far from Denver and far from Tim Tebow, but Tebowmania is in the air; its flying through the ethers, bouncing off satellites and resounding in the arroyos. Last week, Mercury-Jupiter-Uranus trines and squares delivered wild, dramatic, earth-shaking, paradigm-shattering football. This coming week, a juicy Venus-Jupiter sextile promises plenty of adoration and idolization the Tebow and Tom Brady match-up!!! couldnt be more tantalizing but with lunar squares to Pluto and Mercury, and unpredictable, explosive Uranus lurking on the sidelines, its anybodys guess. The Mystical, Magical Journey through the Forest of 2012

As I take my first steps through the mystical forest of 2012, I cannot help but feel a certain type of calculated anticipation and inspired awe. Even being here alive on planet Earth at this particular point in time is somewhat of a miracle.

I cannot count the pages I have read or time I have spent researching indigenous teachings including Mayan prophecies and still, I am far from scholarly or enlightened here. As an astrologer, I often feel a responsibility and obligation to make some sort of statement regarding the highly promoted and prophesized year of 2012. How many times have we collectively seen, heard and thought about this year and that particular date? Individually, what does it mean? What will happen on Dec. 21, 2012, when the solstice sun lines up with the Galactic Center? Will the earth flip on its axis? Will there be great cataclysm and apocalypse? Is this the hour of the Great Ascension?

At times, I feel that its all so much hype. And then, at other times, I know it is real, as real as anything or anybody. I cannot escape the fact that we humans fabricate a thinking, breathing, feeling collective body, an energetic evolutionary force that effects change and manifests destiny. And yet, we are far from all-powerful. The cosmos, the phenomenal universe, planetoids and asteroids, Mother Earth, our Sun, the Moon, the Great Mystery - there are countless energies and entities more powerful than we. WE, we, we who define, rationalize, explain and exploit. We, who carve out and craft our realities, defend our gods and goddesses; pontificate scientific hypotheses and promote mystical, social, psychological and political worldviews. We, who fight for oil, fight for fear and oxymoronically claim to fight for peace. Unified in diversity, a species that comes in thousands of colors and millions of shapes and sizes, we humans are here on Earth in the millennial year 2012, waiting, watching and wondering - together.

I am well aware that this is a major and magnificent paradigm shift, a sweeping change in the collective consciousness, and it will take place - is taking place right now - whether we realize it consciously or not. What was, no longer is. What is, is. To live here - to be here now and vibrantly embrace these times - requires conscious living and conscious loving. We must recognize that everything we do and say has an immediate, resounding affect upon every part and particle of our world, universe and cosmos. We act upon it and it acts upon us, its a processional dance of immediate karma. And we have reached the point in our evolution where knowledge - just knowing that our thoughts have an evolutionary affect upon our evolution speeds up and amplifies the power of the effect. It is the Toltec smoking mirror of action, intention and reflection, when we are being called accountable for everything we have done so far and being called to think, live, act and breathe consciously in the forever present now. And perhaps most of all, the most important player in this dramatic play, the Mother Earth, the Great Mother, the Mother of us all, is up front and center in the meaning and message of this millennial shift. May you immerse yourself in her warmth and be guided by her wisdom as you join me in our mystical journey through the magical forest of 2012. Blessings and peace. May we walk in beauty.

Returning Light, Solstice and Santa Claus...It's Christmas!

Winter Solstice takes place this year at 10:30 pm MST on Dec. 21^st, when the Sun enters the cardinal earth sign Capricorn. Celebrations take place around the world on both Dec. 21^st and 22^nd- Hail the season of Returning Light!

It's a busy week for holiday celebrations that honor light and the season of returning light. Winter Solstice, Hanukkah and Christmas all take place when days are shortest and nights are longest. All of them include ceremonies of light and rituals of fire in their traditions. And let it be so; it's time to honor our universal symbol of spirit - the Sun - primal star of exponential fire; the electromagnetic Force of Light and Life that keeps us all together, moving in circles, revolving around a center, eternally evolving - from year to year, life to life, star to star and galaxy to galaxy.Candles, fires and electric wizardry bestow a variety of choices when it comes to traditional holiday light rituals and displays.
