Watching the Seasons, In Awe of a Rainbow...
As we roll around the wheel, revolve around the Sun, we experience the ups and downs, starts and stops of life. The Mother Earth is a magnificently beautiful, abundantly generous provider and sustainer of that life. She gives us everything we need to live and survive. The tricky part is our part – how we wash our faces, make our beds, weed our gardens. Choices in life are huge. We create our days and manifest our destiny by the choices we make, minute to minute, hour to hour, year to year.
Looking back on my life, I see rainbows of choice. Big and small, easy or difficult, fast or slow, the colors fan out before me. Some have sealed my fate, others simply tinted it with possibility.
Today I live in a remote, southwestern corner of Colorado, the state of my birth. It’s stunning and awesome, nature is up front and personal. Eagles, hawks, bears, badgers, cougars, ravens and coyotes interface with cattle, sheep, horses, goats, chickens, pigs and humans. Sometimes I feel like I’m living in the past - cedar posts and barbed wire fences, blazing western sunsets and cowboys in the saddle, rodeos and wild sunflowers dancing in the breeze. Seasons are distinct, and summer is ending.
This week I am filled with the emotion of another changing season. Autumn is fast approaching, and it’s been raining now for days. This evening, around half-past six, the setting sun burst out behind lavender clouds and bathed the mesa in golden light. To the east, a blue-grey sheet of rain hid the Telluride mountains and the lands beyond like a thick velvet curtain hides actors and sets on a stage.
Painted on the curtain was one of the most vibrant, brilliant rainbows I had ever seen. Arcing above verdant green fields and pinon juniper forests, it reminded me of all that I have loved and lost. All that I have lived; my choices, my hopes and dreams. As the Buddha said, life is a series of agreeable and disagreeable experiences. I am a droplet of water in the Mother Ocean, a grain of sand upon a million sandy beaches, a woman living in a remote corner of southwestern Colorado, watching the seasons, in awe of a rainbow.

Leo (July 23-Aug.22) For many, these times are unbelievably difficult. Powerful, transformational cardinal squares pull rugs out from underneath us, force confrontation and demand change. The Practice of Virtue, Health and Progress - Step by Step and Day by Day
This week we experience the initiation of a far-reaching lunar month, one that carries the potential for amending our lives in the most beneficial and rewarding ways – if we are willing to do the work. Virgo is the 6th sign of the Tropical Zodiac, the second earth sign and the second mutable sign. It serves as a metaphysical bridge between primal Taurus and successful Capricorn, where we move from the essential, primary physical needs for sustenance and survival [Taurus] to the ambitious, impressive achievements and standards required for social recognition, professional success, wealth and even fame [Capricorn].
It is in Virgo that we examine our situation and circumstances, talents, abilities and resources, as well as our character defects and personal shortcomings. Virgo is a process of self-improvement and self-betterment that reminds us to focus on progress rather than perfection and favors good health over massive wealth. Virtue is the touchstone here, humility and sacrifice are tools of the trade.
Virgo is also a finishing school of sorts, a place to take personal inventory and identify what needs bolstering and/or improvement before launching into the interactive realm of significant one-to-one relationships, partnership and marriage. We want to be the best we can be, attract the finest partners and live the most productive, healthy, rewarding life possible - and Virgo says we can do it. All we need to do is establish a daily practice of cleanliness, hygiene and organization, find a physical exercise routine that works – walks, yoga, sit-ups, cycling, swimming, the gym – eat good, nutritious food, drink plenty of water and breathe lots of unpolluted, fresh air. Then take a good, long look at your spiritual condition and whether or not you feel happy, relaxed and at peace. Yes or no, take steps to make it better.
The trick to Virgo is not getting caught up in the “I’m not good enough, I’ll never be perfect, my life is a mess, I’m doomed to failure” internal dialogue, and then giving up on the practice. Why bother? Because you are worth it! Virgo is a mutable earth sign, and mutable signs [Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces] are inherently restless. They are often distracted in the midst of accomplishment, inclined to change horses mid-stream and lose focus due to lack of interest, excitement or simple boredom. Fortunately, Virgo loves virtue and progress, excels when it comes to helping others, wants to be of service and understands that everything takes work. We reap, and harvest, what we sow.
So, during this first week of our fresh Virgo new Moon lunation, seed the universe with well-crafted, precious images of your highest, most beautiful, healthy, productive, assistful self. Intention in the Fertile Cosmic Soil of the Magical Black Moon
The waning Moon is a time of inner light and illumination. As nights grow darker, stars become brighter. The vast canopy of deep space shimmers with mystery and possibility, inviting us to dream our dreams, explore our hearts and discover our souls.
I am always surprised by the feeling of peace that envelops me when I am standing outside, beneath the quiet magnificence of a sparkling night sky. Planets shine and stars twinkle. The Mother Earth breathes in harmony with the cosmic heart. My human body becomes a piece and particle, a wave in a larger quantum field – the universal field of creative energy and magnetic light. I know my soul and spirit exist as an interconnected energetic field of an infinite universal body. Soul to soul, body to body, I am one with the Universe. Amidst the sounds of silence, I hear the music of the spheres. The perspective is comforting, daunting and, yet somehow, supernaturally serene.
This week gives us all a chance to experience universal oneness via the night sky. The waning Moon grows smaller each evening – and nights grow darker - winding its way to the magical, fertile 24 hour “black moon” period prior to the September 5th Virgo new Moon @ 5:36 am MDT.
Everyone on planet Earth is being presented with an opportunity to “tune in” to celestial magic and plant actual and metaphorical seeds of intention and desire – seeds planted in the fertile cosmic soil of unlimited potential and infinite possibility.
In the year 1999, I decided to read and practice Deepak Chopra’s “Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” on a daily basis, for the entire year. On October 22nd of that year – which happens to be Deepak’s birthday - I attended an invitation only press conference at the Franz Klammer lodge in Telluride with the man himself. The late degree Libra Sun on his day of birth exactly conjuncts my natal Mercury – planet of intellect, perception and communication – so, of course, he speaks my language. Needless to say, I was stunned by the wild synchronicity of this event. It validated the profound wisdom of his teachings and supported, by manifestation, that getting in sync’ with the cosmos actually worked. Intention and desire? Pure potentiality and infinite possibility? Yes.
For anyone interested in the metaphysics of human life here on Earth as it interacts and interfaces with universal, cosmic life, I strongly suggest picking up this “practical guide to the fulfillment of your dreams." It’s a guidebook for cultivating a daily spiritual practice, which is a totally virtuous Virgo thing to do. Happy travels and sweet dreams.

Celebrate and Honor the Goddess of Harvest - Inside and Out
Welcome to the zodiac month of Virgo, time to honor the goddess and celebrate the beauty and bounty of our magnificent home planet. As the second earth sign on the astrological wheel – Taurus is the first and Capricorn is the last - the Virgo season arrives at summer’s end, when fruits and vegetables are ripe for harvest and autumn golds paint streaks in fields, mountains and meadows of green. Farmers markets are flooded with produce, gardens are being cleared and we start thinking of putting up store for winter – canning, drying and freezing. How to preserve these precious gifts of life?
Virgo is also a powerfully poignant time of year. We can feel the full vibrance of the Mother Earth, so recently infused with the golden sunrays of the Leo sun-time. The fiery strength and wild-hearted passion of the Lion tames in the calm presence of the virtuous Virgin, as the flaming heat of summer’s zenith surrenders to the cool nights and crisp mornings of summer’s end.
It is here we see the value of our work, our daily routines, our choices and decisions. While Leo gets caught up in the beauty, fun, creativity, love and romance of life, Virgo recognizes the necessity and rewards of service. A Happy and Full-of-Grace August 20th Leo-Aquarius Full Moon
The other day I was returning from a walk in the woods adjoining the canyon rim south of our home. It was late afternoon and sun-rays were slanting across the mesa, filling our tall, seed-laden grass pasture with light. Bluebirds danced along fence posts and a red-tail hawk soared quietly above. A soft breeze embraced me with the sweet smell of alfalfa, blended with the rich aromas of a happy Mother Earth. I took a deep breath and felt suddenly light, light-headed, like a young girl in first-love, transported somewhere beyond and above, yet totally present in the here-and-now. It was as if, for several long seconds, I was simultaneously merging and transcending - at one with the cosmos – fully human and fully spirit. It was one of those moments that can only be experienced in the flesh, but must be invoked by something mysteriously magical or divine. A gap in eternity, a glimpse into heaven – today, what I know as grace - a moment of ethereal bliss.
Further up the trail toward home – seemingly walking on air - I questioned my reality. Why did it feel so supernatural? Was it just the weather, the beautiful day, the puffy white clouds against the azure sky, the morphing season, or? Suddenly I realized it was the time of year – the mid-summer, Leo cross-quarter week of dynamic electromagnetic force and change – the powerful cosmic pulls on body, mind and spirit; the shifting tides, the changing light, the light! It was the light!
And then, I remembered, all things are lights. We are virtually made of light. We, like all plants and animals on this earth, depend and run on a naturally generated, photo-synthetic clock – our Sun. Our bodies, mind and spirits are attuned to the duration and angle of solar rays. It’s something that happens to us regardless of who or where we are, or what we do - sub-consciously, involuntarily, automatically. Of course, today, in our man-made, electric world of 24-hour power and fossil fuel-generated illumination, we can easily lose touch with our natural rhythms and cycles. I just so happened to catch myself in one of the year’s most dazzling and dramatic celestial cycles, in the light, and the Lion roared.
Recent rains and afternoon showers have turned our fields a deep, emerald green. Mushrooms have popped up in all kinds of funny places and the parched, powdery dirt of drought has been replaced with sprigs and sprouts of verdant life. I feel lucky to live in a place so close to nature, even if it is out here in the deserted, desolate, wild West End. Good luck and God bless. Mid-summer Night's Dreams......Embrace Her, Love Her, Touch Her
Every year I find myself looking forward to August 7th - the exact point of mid-summer – which is the yearly Leo cross-quarter day [when the Sun is @ 15º Leo] and the halfway mark between summer solstice and autumn equinox. Before that day, I am full-on into summer – sweltering heat, sunny days, starry nights and those luscious, languid feelings that only hot summer days and warm-hot summer nights can bring.
I know that by August 8th the nights will have cooled. The monsoon rains will have moved mudslides down canyons and mud down rivers. Yellow aspen leaves will appear in the high country and lowland greens will have been touched with gold. Tall grasses along the ditches and fences will bend and sway, waving their seeds in the wind, heavy with bounty. Zinnias and sunflowers will be in full bloom. Rose-colored peaches and pale yellow sweet corn shows up in fruit stands and farmers markets, on tables - and for many - bound for freezers and pantries.
I made my first peach-blueberry pie of the season last night. Yumm! My garden is generous with spinach, garlic, lettuce, peas, peppers and herbs, the tomatoes are sweet and the beans are climbing. Life is a beautiful miracle, - we can grow our own food! And we are here to do it, embrace it, eat it, live it and love it.
As always, I feel the poignant pull of fall as August 8th rolls around. My heart knows the dance well. Mother Nature will dazzle me in all her abundant glory. Towering cumulus clouds and pink-crimson sunsets will fill my heart with wonder and awe. I will feel the paradox of living fully in the now as I watch the magnificent summer slip away, morphing into the dramatically powerful, magical season of autumn. And as I do, I will feel the beating heart of my own true mother, the Mother Earth – and she is your Mother, too. Embrace her, love her, touch her. May we live in harmony with her. After all, we are here - all of us – in her embrace, in her care. The family of man, woman and child. Together, forever.

We all know the lion as the king – or queen – of beasts. Strong, courageous and proud, no animal on earth catches the attention and stimulates the imagination like this one. For millennia, humankind has held the lion as a symbol of strength, power and passion. Its magnificent mane, tremendous teeth and resounding roar give us good reason to stop and take note. We feel danger; our instinctive awareness identifies the presence of a creature capable of ripping us to shreds. Stunning, awesome and beautiful, enticing and enchanting, the primal relationship aroused by the regal lion is one that excites our senses and awakens the hidden, ancient memories buried deep within our psychic DNA.

Cancer/Leo Seasons and Cycles, Mumbo-Jumbo Shifts & Shapes
I love the fertile blend of the Cancer/Leo zodiac months. Mother Nature arrives in all her glory and abundance. Flowers blossom, fruits ripen and garden vegetables pop up in farmer’s markets and on kitchen tables. Summer is in full bloom. The long, hot days of summer are here. It’s time for fun and family, swimming pools, picnics, mountain hikes and waterfalls. Quite mornings and luscious evenings, monsoon rains, western sunsets and starry skies.
Seasons and cycles, revolutions around the Sun, we experience each year uniquely, sort of the same, but different. Some things we can count on, and some things we cannot. The hours of day and night remain the same in each season, season to season and year to year, but so many other factors are subject to change. Temperatures and weather, rainfall or drought, we take what we get.
Astronomy and astrology give us a framework to work with. Moon cycles chart appropriate times for planting and harvest, coincide with our physical biorhythms and control the ocean’s shifting tides. Planetary cycles indicate individual and social trends and transitions. As planets change signs and direction, we feel deep shifts of focus and perception.
This year, during Cancer/Leo, Mercury resumed forward motion, Saturn went direct, Uranus went retrograde and good luck, good fortune planet Jupiter moved into Cancer, followed a few weeks later by Mars, the ancient god of men and war.
All this translates as a mumbo-jumbo mix of motivation, direction and priority. Themes of home, family, emotion and sentimentality run rampant. We want to be loved and taken care of, nurtured and comforted, held and consoled. Of course, the solution lies within. As above, so below.
Reach out to the wild abundance surrounding you. Find solace and comfort in the Mother Earth. Touch nature, watch the Sun rise and set. Follow the clouds, dance in the rain and look for rainbows. Find the Mother and embrace the Lion with compassion and courage. Follow your heart.

Cosmic Clocks and Cosmic Consciousness
The planets of our solar system are like an enormous cosmic clock, gears and wheels in circular revolution, timekeepers of seasons and cycles. Ancient cultures learned to chart the movement and phases of the Sun and Moon, map the transiting planets against the backdrop of fixed star constellations, and correlate celestial phenomena with natural events and changes here on Earth.
Then, in 1687, Isaac Newton’s breakthrough model of a mechanical universe, with its laws of motion and definition of gravity, awakened the western world to the notion of a divinely inspired and constructed cosmos, held together by a mysterious gravitational force. The cosmic clock metaphor – along with a new understanding of spectral light and color – was accepted amongst scientists as the new physical reality. Thus, the “Newtonian” worldview came to permeate the understanding and definition of not only the physical world, but also of such intellectual fields as politics and economics—in which people now sought simple and universal laws that harmonized with and supported Newton’s laws of physics and astronomy.
Today, we have come a far distance from Newton’s simplistic mechanical universe. Einstein’s theory of relativity, quantum physics, string theory and the dual particle-like and wave-like behavior and interactions of energy and matter indicate there are even more mysteries and metaphors for what we define as physical reality.
That said, we are still living in what we refer to as “real time” – the day-to-day, moment-by-moment progression and evolution of life as we know it. Thus, the cosmic clock remains a relevant metaphor to our human experience, and it continues to amaze me how recurring planetary cycles constellate repeating energetic themes.
The Uranus/Pluto conjunction [in Virgo] that took place the revolutionary [Uranus], metamorphic [Pluto] psychedelic 60’s has come back to haunt us 50 years later in the shape of a powerful 90º cardinal [Aries/Capricorn] planetary square. Conjunctions characterize birth and new beginnings, initiations and radical awakenings. Squares indicate the first challenges to that initial birth and awakening. They are checkpoints in the evolutionary process, times when we must readdress the energies and issues that emerged at the conjunction.
If you were around and living in the 60’s, you know what went on. If not, you have surely heard and experienced some of it via movies and the media. The ideals of freedom and democracy, individual liberties, social justice and equality, anti-war/peace demonstrations, civil rights and the back to the land movement; "free" love, sex, drugs and rock-and-roll were themes.
Now we see all these things in different guises. Different shapes and sizes. What was born in the 60's is being challenged and tested today. What have we done? How have we advanced? What can we do now? What still needs to be done? There are a lot of good people, with good motives and intentions. And there are many challenges. Squares are all about challenges and taking action. If we don’t take action willingly - consciously - we are forced by apparently outside forces to take action. So, here’s to conscious right action. May we be blessed with the knowledge of right and wrong and the spiritual, celestial support of Cosmic Consciousness. May the Force be with you.

Cancer (June 21-July 22) As good luck, good fortune planet Jupiter rolls through the first degrees of Cancer, count your blessings and take a deep breath of the clean, fresh air surrounding you. Open your heart to the world of all possibilities and seek your treasure on the path of goodness and grace. Consider the equations of action and consequence. Recognize your part, and do your best.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Ruler Uranus goes retrograde this week, initiating a prolonged period of potential self-awareness and self-awakening. As the world rattles and rolls, the people upon it twist and turn. You understand the deep power that individuals have when they work as a collective. And yet, you long for connection with those you can hold in high esteem. Keep looking and you will find it.
Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20) Outer planet Uranus joins Neptune [in Pisces] and Pluto in retrograde motion this week, jumpstarting the trend toward reworking what we, as a collective whole, have left undone. Personal frustrations and recurring situations hold valuable clues in the quest for inner peace and outer calm. Do you best, cultivate patience and follow your truth.

Visible Planets: Morning: Mercury Evening: Jupiter, Saturn
This week I feel compelled to write about the long-standing, ongoing Uranus [in Aries] – Pluto [in Capricorn] cardinal square. Once again, like so many planetary transits, I feel the pull of the stress and strains, the thematic challenges that seem to repeat themselves and the overall apparent effects in the lives of those closest and dearest, as well as those furthest and least dear.
Uranus and Pluto are outer planets and are therefore energetic envoys to collective, global movements, universal catharsis and mass change. As individuals, we often experience the energy coming from the outside, in waves, via social media or experiences, national news and international events. The world quakes, people revolt, governments crumble, volcanoes erupt and tsunamis roll. Sometimes the phenomena hits us directly, and our lives fall apart. We lose loved ones or experience radical, disruptive change. Other times, we are awakened to the fact that there are powers much greater and stronger than we are. We must surrender and let go, get down on our knees and ask for help. Humility, in quest of grace.
For many of us here in the desert southwest, the surrender and powerlessness has come in the shape of what is now referred to as “climate change” or “global warming”. A severe drought has left normally green fields parched, auburn, blonde and brown. Fires have raged, smoke has settled. On a mesa kissed and crowned by the majestic San Juans on the east end and Utah’s blue, sky island La Sals on the west end, summer usually comes in the shape of towering cumulus clouds, afternoon showers and shimmering rainbows. But, this year, summer has been super-hot and dry. It hasn’t rained for months.
Remote and rural, we depend upon Mother Nature for our survival. Without rain, the land suffers and life withers. But, here we are. And, here I am, an infinitesimal human upon a planet revolving around a central star, a planet amongst a group of celestial bodies in a solar system spiraling around the Galactic Center of our Milky Way Galaxy - a galaxy that is one of billions.
Looking at my place today from that perspective, I harvest inner calm. I know my efforts are worthwhile and cause effect. Action is karmic and forever. The Sun, the Moon, the planets and the stars give me hope, give me heart, give me the courage to stay busy, to do the chores, and against all odds, keep the faith. These times are wild and crazy. The Uranus – Pluto square constellates for me the Super PACS and super powers that seem to be in control of our fate and fortune as humans upon this planet Earth. Money and greed seem to rule. That’s the Pluto in Capricorn part. On the other end of the square, I feel my small importance and big responsibility – to myself and others – to personally awaken and take action, find and follow the truth, maintain self-authenticity and do the next right thing, to the best of my ability. That’s the Uranus in Aries part – the enlightened, self-motivated bodhisattva or spiritual warrior – the one ready and willing to fight for right, for goodness, peace, compassion, equality and justice.
On the evening of July 10th, I went outside to turn the water off in our garden. The day had been like a sauna, sweltering heat in the 90’s. The Sun set behind a smoky haze, a red-orange ball blazing below the purple-blue western horizon. The 0% humidity had wicked the moisture out of everything. But then, a soft, seductive, cooling breeze blew in. Turquoise twilight showcased a brilliant Venus next to a delicate crescent Moon. I stood at the garden gate and breathed it in. I blessed the Sun, the Moon, the stars. I asked for guidance and direction, clarity amidst the chaos, humility amongst the hubris. And I asked for rain.
And, in honor of goodness and grace, mystery and magic, the next day it rained!!! And, today I am grateful. I thank the rain gods and the Great Spirit. Uranus – Pluto continues to shock and transform, force humility, resurrect and regenerate. To Guadalupe, Jesus Cristo, and to whomever and whatever you pray, I give thanks.
Aries (Mar. 20-Apr. 19) The big news: Saturn resumed forward motion in Scorpio on July 7th, shifting tides and clearing a path of progress for those willing to address the deepest, darkest secrets of the psyche. Emotions and feelings provide you with all the fuel you need to burn through the ego’s superficial barriers. As a warrior of spirit, you are brave and courageous. Seek assistance from invisible sources. Embrace faith and go forth.
Taurus (Apr. 19-May 20) Practical and patient, the Bull is gifted with the natural abilities to weather even the most turbulent storms with grace. We, the people…
Mom, home and apple pie. Parades, fireworks and American flags. Outdoor barbeques, hot dogs, hamburgers and corn on the cob. Coca-cola, lemonade and iced tea. And for those who drink beer, plenty of our own home-brew - made with pure Rocky Mountain water from iconic cascading Clear Creek- good, old, golden, Colorado Coors.
The 4th of July is the day we United States citizens celebrate and commemorate our independence and freedom. It is the one day out of the entire year when Americans join force in both physical and metaphysical ways. On this day, we are united in some sort of ethereal realm that understands the foundations of liberty, justice and equality for all. Our hearts and minds travel to the ideals of democracy, the Declaration of Independence and its assertion that we, as Americans, “hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
There is something brave and inspirational about these words, something that generates a sense of pride and gratitude, and for me, feelings of humility. I know I am blessed and fortunate to have been born here, in the U.S.A., regardless of our failures and foibles as a nation and society. To have grown up in Colorado, where the air and water were clean and clear, in an aesthetically, physically and spiritually nurturing natural environment, with good people and plenty of opportunity. Lucky to have two brothers and two sisters – both older and younger - a Mom and Dad, grandparents that helped lead the way.
There is a beautiful, touching glow that comes with this American holiday. Memories of summer’s past, romantic longings and fruitions, magnificent pyrotechnic displays - from my childhood in Denver, with popcorn and Kool-aid from our rooftop overlooking the city, to the wonderland of Telluride and it's magnificent, mountain-rimmed box canyon, to dancing with my handsome husband at a cowboy party way out in Dry Creek Basin on a hot summer night under a shimmering full Moon - I love them all.
For all we are and all we can be, Happy Independence Day. May the Force be with us all. God Bless those who practice peace, liberty and justice for all.

April, May and June have been full of physical trials and emotional turmoil, tantalizing possibilities, love and loss, pain and gain. I often wonder what the world is coming to. And then I think, how trite, how silly, how cliché. Haven’t “people” been asking that question for eons? What is so different – if anything – about now? Is it just my imagination? Am I being dramatically self-centered? Or, are others feeling this rather raucous, confused cuckoo craziness, too?
And yet, I do feel as if we have somehow fallen off the proverbial cliff - as a culture, species and collective social, intellectual and political mass. Gun violence, depression, suicide, rising costs and shrinking economies. Over-amped informational menus, with so much on our plates, what’s a girl or boy to do? And what about morality? Have we lost sight of those behaviors and behavioral codes that keep us healthy and happy - mentally, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually? Certainly, morality does change over time and with the tides, but aren’t the core values of honesty, integrity, compassion, virtue and respect still the foundational stones upon which to build a life?
These last few months presented us with three consecutive eclipses - two lunar and one solar. And, of course, the ongoing, slow-moving Pluto-Uranus square continues to shock, awaken and disrupt both our sense of self and the social-political structure of our nation and world. I have long noticed the intensity of “eclipse windows” and write about them often. This year, our Hansen family patriarch passed away in mid-April, as the eclipse window opened. By the time the window closed, I had lost two others – a beautiful, sweet, innocent young girl of 23, and a richly-experienced, wisened and leathered old cowboy of 97.
I am not lamenting the natural flow of life and death, or the inevitable twists and turns that make up our mystical, mysterious journey here on Earth. I am expressing the poignant pull of the strings that wrap around our hearts. The strings of love and laughter, pain and loss, agony and ecstasy, fortune and fate.
On June 26th @ 7:08 am MDT, multi-faceted Mercury went stationary retrograde @ 23 degrees Cancer. In England, at Wimbledon an entire brigade of champions tripped, slipped and fell – literally – dropping out and losing their matches. Physical injuries ran rampant. The planets? Who knows? But just for good measure, today – and for the next three weeks - I’m going to do my best to take it easy. I’m going to tap into the “re” of Mercury retrograde and relax, retreat, regenerate and recover. Mercury retrograde in Cancer translates as the preeminent time to baby-up and self-nurture, reconnect with what's inside and do the inner work.
And I’m not going to write another word.
Aries (Mar. 20-Apr. 19) Plenty of planetary shifts and retrogrades may have you looking both backwards and forward. Work on projects and take care of business from the past. Finish what needs to be finished before starting anew. Focus on progress. Clean up messes at home, weed gardens, organize your space and tend to personal improvement, hygiene and self-care. You feel so much better, it is totally worth the time and effort.
Taurus (Apr. 19-May 20) As ruler Venus enters sensitive, nurturing Cancer, take your foot off the pedal and slow down. There is so much beauty surrounding you – touch, taste and feel it. Mother Nature provides blossoming flowers, succulent fruits and magnificent skies to calm our spirits, feed our bodies and nurture our souls. Tend to your gardens and cultivate inner peace via self-care. Children are joyous and fun. Spend time in love.
Gemini (May 20-June 20) Mercury, the Twins’ planetary ruler, goes stationary retrograde in Cancer June 27th and initiates a three week period favoring words using the prefix “re” - review, revise, revisit, re-create, research, return, recharge, reinvent…the list goes on and on. Expect and focus upon themes of personal importance and value, many of which are emotionally charged and ripe for the picking. This is a time of great potential, go deep.
Cancer (June 20-July 22) Mental Mercury goes retrograde in Cancer this week and encourages a less aggressive, more sensitive approach to life. If you have been feeling rushed, hurried or harried, now is the time to slow the pace and rethink the race. What have you been upset about? How can you change your own behavior and/or thinking to amend situations that are unacceptable, unhealthy or destructive? Take your time.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 22) Voluptuous, romantic Venus moves into Leo on June 28th and remains there until late July. Congratulations and good news! Your love life - dramatically important to heart-ruled Lions – seduces, beguiles and entices you and others into having some of the most luscious, light-hearted laughs and litanies of the year. I'll gaze at the Moon 'til I lose my senses...
Summer solstice takes place on June 20th at 11:07 pm MDT this year, just two days before the Cancer Sun and Capricorn Moon oppose each other [June 23rd @5:32 am MDT] in the fruition aspect of the June full Moon. Velvet Venus shimmers above the western horizon in twilight and on into darkness as our preeminent evening star. Nearby Mercury looks faint and faded amongst Venus and the bright stars [Castor and Pollux] of Gemini. Serious Saturn, high in the sky each night, keeps a watchful eye on all below, making sure all is in order.
As I write these words, I am feeling the electromagnetic pull of life upon my soul and psyche. I understand that my journey here is temporary, and short, in relation to the eons of time it took to get here. Astrological ages weave intricate webs of thematic stories, theories and possibilities for mankind, tracing the history and evolution of organic life, human culture and consciousness. The night sky, in its ever-present mystery and magnificence, remains a revolving constant in an ever-changing, imploding and exploding world. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty of our lives here on Earth, the fixed-star constellations seem timeless and eternal, touchstones of reference and stability. And, yet, this too, is an illusion, a comforting metaphysical apparition relative only to one’s point in time and space.
One thing, however, I know for certain. I love the stars and the wide expanses of the starry night sky. I can breathe in the beauty of Venus in twilight, hovering above Utah’s La Sal Moutnains, in a fading turquoise, Maxfield Parrish sky. I can open my heart to the heart-star of the Scorpion, red-orange Antares, on a moonless, blue-black night and follow the constellation’s familiar curve to the twinkling “cat’s eyes” of the stinger’s tail. Just like an animal cloaked in darkness, two starry points of light shine back at me in recognition, alive, breathing and ready to run. I am thankful and grateful to live in a place without light pollution and, from eastern to western horizon, I have the luxury of watching the Sun and Moon rise and set each morning and night.
And this brings me to where I need to be and what I want to write about. The wide-open spaces of the cowboy. Life in the saddle and home on the range. The western life, underneath the starry sky, that has been romanticized and fabled, fantasized and fantasticized. It is the life I see slipping away, disappearing like the Sun below that magnificent western horizon I know, love and breathe. Like the life of one of the most authentic, western cowboys I have ever known and loved.
On June 5, 2013, Mario Bart Zadra saddled up his Cayuse for the last and final time and took off, passing from his cowboy life here on Earth to the one over yonder. He was 97 years old. A man of great humility, kindness and compassion, Mario lived and breathed the western life like no other. He understood the value of hard work, patience and perseverance. He was gentle with his cattle, dogs and horses; a loyal, trusted friend and a smart, honest business man. He rose to success on his own, day by day, step by step. He was a man of authenticity and integrity, a man of great wisdom, compassion and good humor. Born on May 12, 1916, Mario was a quintessential Taurus, he loved the land and the Mother Earth. He learned how to earn a living with his head and hands, provide for his family, feed his livestock and set store for long, cold winters. He was not only resourceful, but he also knew how to manage his resources. He knew how to save rather than spend, was stable and reliable, responsible, a man of his word. And he was one of the only men I ever met that loved and breathed the starry night sky as much as I do.
Last week a memorial service and burial took place in Montrose, the soft place he landed after many years of living between Ridgway, Ouray, and his ranch in Norwood. Placed on the church altar were his saddle, blanket, boots and spurs. An immaculate white straw cowboy hat sat on top his coffin. After the service, we were gifted with a slide show of photographs on a few big flat-screen TVs; snapshots of Mario’s life and loves played out before us, all set to the music of some of the most touching, classic western songs ever written. Don’t Fence Me In, Home on the Range, Red River Valley, Twilight On the Trail, Happy Trails and, last but not least, I’ll Fly Away. It was oh so sweet.
Mario’s full and rich life - filled with adventure, romance, challenge, courage, accomplishment and change - stands as an example for all. May he rest and ride in peace.
Meanwhile, I think I’ll go out and gaze at this week’s super-Moon ‘til I lose my senses, learn the words to Don’t Fence Me In and share the night sky with all those who love and breathe it like I do - here, there, wherever they are - I believe that like the stars, the heart does go on…and on. Aries (Mar. 20-Apr. 19) So much takes place this week astrologically, and for Aries, it is huge. Jupiter’s entrance into cardinal Cancer, along with Summer Solstice and a Full Moon load the bases with plenty of emotion, potential and fireworks. Forever Young....and Beautiful
I have to admit, I am having a difficult time writing the intro to this week's Alacazem astrology column. I want to write about Elizabeth “Bets” Stiles Patterson, a beautiful young girl who accidentally fell off a cliff on a magnificently magical summer night. It was a night studded with stars, a black Moon, no moonlight, only starlight. She was camping outside of Moab with friends on a fabulously dramatic ridge called Porcupine Rim, which overlooks the red rock spires and canyons of Castle Valley. She awoke not long after midnight and got up to pee. In the morning, she was missing.
I received the news of her death from my niece, Allie, who lives in Telluride and finds out about everything long before I do down here in the wild West End. Of course, it was painful and sad – for both Allie and me. More than painful and sad, tragic. Devastating. Like Elizabeth’s father, Stiff, had said when I saw him and hugged him the evening before Bets’ memorial service, “There are no words.”
Allie lost her sister, Lise, 19 years ago, in 1994, and she understands the pain of losing someone so near and dear to the heart. A sister, a friend, a lifetime companion, someone who was always there to share life; laugh and cry. And Allie knew Bets well. She had coached her in soccer when she first moved to Telluride from Boulder in 2002. Bets was only 12 at the time. And I also knew Bets well. Stiff and Jenny had come with Bets and their son, Chas, to stay with us at our casa in Cabo Pulmo, Mexico, in the winter of 1994. At that time, Bets was only three years old. I can’t tell you how beautiful, smart, sweet and funny she was. Golden white blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes, like the little girl I never had. We laughed and played, danced and sang, made up poems and ran on the beach, swam in the ocean, shot off fireworks, romped with our Great Pyrennese Zorka, collected seashells, gazed at the stars. She loved pink, just like I did and still do. My little amigita, mi hija. Now gone.
I cannot express my sorrow, or my compassion for Stiff, Jenny and Chas. I know well the road they travel. It was the same year, in June of 1994, that Lise came to visit Richard and I in Cabo Pulmo for her senior trip. She was graduating from high school and wanted to come stay with us in Mexico rather than go off with her schoolmates elsewhere in Mexico to drink and party. I was surprised and excited, and oh so blessed. She left us the following November in a slushy, icy white-out snow storm automobile accident, in the darkness of night.
1994 was a year of great blessings for me. I made my pacts with both Lise and Bets. And now they are both in the other world, the land of spirit, the journey of souls. These 19 years later, I am aware that the year 2013 is the year of the recurring eclipse cycle that took place in 1994. And my heart is open, filled with love and sorrow. When a heart breaks, it breaks open. Blessings and peace. Forever young…and beautiful.
Aries (Mar. 20-Apr. 19) The last full week of spring offers up plenty of busy-ness, one way or another. Dealing with communication issues – returning calls, responding to emails, tidying up your immediate environment, doing daily business – and moving about - around and around – you have come full circle. Surrender, forgiveness and compassion are allies in the rather chaotic mix of happenstance. Cultivate kindness, for yourself and others.
Taurus (Apr. 19-May 20) Plenty of self-reliance and take-care-of-yourself energy permeates the wee, in spite of the fact that you love sharing your life and your feelings with others. Take care of business, make to do lists and cross the tasks and accomplishments off one at a time. One thing for certain, you know how to complete a project, no matter how long it takes. Love and beauty come via sweet compassion and acts of nurturing. Enjoy the joy.
Gemini (May 20-June 20) Mars in your sign continues to compel and impel you, awakening desire and pushing you forward. Just be sure to take a break now and then, rest and relax. Venus and Mercury in Cancer favor self-nurturing and self-care. Take a good look at your daily routines and consider whether or not you are living in harmony with your values. Remember that health is wealth. No matter what it costs, it’s worth it.
Cancer (June 20-July 22) Venus and Mercury in your sign are attempting to balance a feisty, win-at-any-cost Mars in Gemini this week and the result is somewhat like being on a teeter-totter or roller coaster out of control. With emotion on one end and reason on the other, your heart and head may be feeling, thinking, questioning logic and attempting to come up with solutions for seemingly unsolvable problems. Leo (July 22-Aug. 22) Defining the indefinable is a favorite pastime of philosophers, scientists, scholars, priests and pundits.
